Prof. Dr. Georg Schett and his translational team at Iat Department of Medicine 3 – Rheumatology and Immunology at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen are working towards a new therapeutic goal: resetting the immune system and enabling lasting, drug-free remission.
Their pioneering approach transfers CAR T-cell therapy from cancer medicine to autoimmune diseases. The patient’s own T cells are modified to identify and eliminate disease-causing B cells, giving the immune system the opportunity to rebuild itself.
For this scientific achievement, Georg Schett has been named Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year 2026 in Life Sciences. He will present the breakthrough under the title “Breaking the Wall of Autoimmune Diseases” at the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin in November.
