How can inflammation of the skin spread to the joints?

A research group at the Department of Medicine 3, Erlangen University Hospital, FAU Erlangen–Nuremberg, has identified a mechanism that explains how psoriasis can extend beyond the skin to involve the joints.

For the first time, the team (Maria Gabriella Raimondo, Andreas Ramming, Simon Rauber, and Hashem Mohammadian) demonstrated which immune cells migrate from the skin to the joints and why these cells, once established, trigger inflammation.

These findings provide new insights into disease progression and may pave the way for targeted therapies aimed at preventing the migration of inflammatory cells in the future.
